I have been doing a major wardrobe revamp of late, brought on by the warmer weather and arrival of some really pretty spring clothes in the shops.
I've also started using a lovely vintage tooled leather handbag that my Mom saved from the 1970s and gave to me years and years ago. It's really strange using a 'normal' sized handbag after the huge totes we use today and throw everything into.
Using it got me thinking about some other beautiful pieces she gave me when I was still a teenager, and which I stupidly threw out in one of my wardrobe purges. Like a turquoise silk Yves St Laurent shirt bought back from Hong Kong by my grandparents (why of why oh why didn't I just pack it away?!) and a lovely chocolate brown leather jacket, fitted at the waist and with wide lapels.
To my credit, I did wear the jacket until the leather under the arm wore away, and I couldn't find anyone to repair it.
Studying my own wardrobe, I'm not certain if there is anything I'll hang onto for my daughter to wear. I've obviously kept my wedding dress, but that's more for sentimental than fashion reasons.
My nicest piece is probably a wool and cashmere blend coat I bought from Massimo Dutti while living in London. It's the only piece of clothing I bought while thinking, "I have no idea how I am going to be able to afford groceries for the rest of the month!" But it was so worth it!
I also have a silk Hermes scarf my husband gave me before we got married that lives in its box and gets brought out once a year or so that will be decent enough to pass down.
And maybe some of the cocktail dresses I have that I wear to weddings and functions, assuming they come back into style one day.
But in this age of fast fashion and forever changing trends, I suppose most of us will just stick to jewellery as a hierloom tradition.
What about you? Do you own any really cool vintage pieces with a story behind them?
xx
