So below is a little mini-tour of our house in Johannesburg, which we'll have lived in for two years this July. I haven't focused specifically on 'living with kids' - we've tried to keep the baby proofing very unobtrusive, for the moment. I'll share the nursery soon in a post of it's own.
If you'd like me to feature your house or nursery, drop me a line with some photos.
Below are a few of my favorite spots in our little house and the story behind them. (All photos by me).
Our front garden is one of the most peaceful little places in our house. We replanted Australian Violets and Penny Royal between the stepping stones last summer and they are coming along beautifully.
Our entrance hall is quite a difficult space - it's quite large so I wanted to make it as useful as possible, but it's still the first room you see when you come into our home. The church bench chairs we bought at a second hand shop in Parkhurst which has sadly since closed, and lovingly restored by my husband (I was pregnant and not allowed near the wood stainer). The roll-top desk I found in a funny little second hand shop in Linden and is in pristine condition - it only needed a slight dusting.
The artwork and rug are both wedding presents and so very special. We took the money people gave us when we got married to buy the Kentridge print at David Krut, which must be the most unpretentious gallery in the city.
This is a detail from my kitchen - it's actually the back door that leads into the garage. We bought the birdie laser cutout in Darling in the Western Cape, and brought it all the way back to Johannesburg in my packed to the rafters little mini when we moved up to Jo'burg. I'd love to put a blackboard at the bottom of the door soon so that Lilia can create some masterpieces while I work in the kitchen.
I've done our bedroom so that it's restful without being 'girly'. Please note the very cool light fitting which took a few years of my life to source and get shipped to Jo'burg. I love it, it's made from silk cocoons, was a ridiculous price for a light but makes me so happy!
The chest of draws was given to me by my gran. I restored and stained it and changed the handles. It was used it as a compactum and changing table in the nursery when my mom was a baby. I think it's really important to have pieces in your home that have a great story.
